Founder Clarence Young III had been a Vietnam Vet in theUS Air Force and was part of a theatrical troupeentertaining soldiers in 15 countries. When he returnedhome in 1969, he started a theatre company in Dayton asan outlet for inner city youth to come together and expressthemselves. Young became widely respected as aplaywright and 1971 was a breakthrough year as hereceived national accolades for his off-Broadway playsPerry’s Mission and The System, portraying black lives inAmerica as life in a penitentiary. At its height, Theatre Westinvolved around 27 members. “Everybody playedeverything and did everything,” recalls bassist SigmondDillard. “We all had to sing, dance and act all the time. Ifsomeone messed up, you came in. It was a tight unit andwe were constantly helping each other out.”
