Mr. K treats the edit like surgery. He's precise and almost invisible while working entirely in service of the song. The A-side of his latest splices Jill Scott's 'Golden' against an unreleased 2005 Blackbeard breakdown with strings sweeping in before a tambourine acapella strips it back to bone. Flip it over and Mos Def's 'Umi Says' gets a full extra minute of runway with swirling Weldon Irvine Jr. keys, a superb bassline coiling underneath and vocals held just out of reach.
