July 23

Originally released in 1996, Black Market Gardening stands as one of the finest achievements of acclaimed downtempo pioneers Fila Brazillia.

“Few other bands can create such a ‘live feel’ with so much technology. Black Market Gardening combines stone-cold downtempo chillers with hustlin’ Latin soul, disco, and deep-space vibes like few other records. ‘Blubber Plinth’ changes effortlessly from a trip-hop hazer to an out-and-out breakbeat stomper, and tracks like ‘Xique Xique’ and ‘Onc Mongani’ roll on forever in blissful, phased, and reverbed crescendos. It all comes crashing down with the brilliantly monotoned and thunder-filled ‘July 23rd’. This crop was well tended, raised in the sunlight of high summer, and nurtured to bring about one of the finest vintages of its time.”
