Julienne Dessagne’s starkly beautiful reimagining of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game, featuring remixes by Jonnie Wilkes of Optimo (Espacio) and Aho Ssan.

The impact on the artist and the music was multi-layered:

“While recording this cover, images of the Trinity nuclear test, as reimagined by David Lynch in Twin Peaks (Season 3, Episode 8), kept resurfacing, almost on a subliminal level, suggesting another wicked game: humanity’s love affair with science and technology, driven by the same mix of desire, fascination and inevitability that animates Chris Isaak’s original song.”

Dessagne offers a spectrum of mixes and moods. The sweeping, cinematic Trinity Version moves between beauty and terror, capturing the aesthetics of the sublime. The Thousand Suns Version fuses industrial and techno soundscapes into a beatdown reimagining, while the melancholic Atomic Love Version pairs Dessagne’s beautiful vocals with a glitchy, clipped ambience. Finally, the Core Version unfolds as a personal, drifting odyssey.

Composer and sound artist Aho Ssan (Niamké Désiré) brings his own interpretation, merging a love of darkcore drone with moments of uplifting energy. His Core Version (Aho Ssan Remix) fuses meticulous craftsmanship with Dessagne’s evocative vocals.

Closing the collection, Jonnie Wilkes embraces the propulsive energy of the Optimo sound. His Thousand Suns Version (Optimo (Espacio) Remix) delivers brooding, electro-driven percussion that overflows with emotion, completing this stunning, evolving, organic and singular reimagining.
