Blueless - Door To The Floor

Blueless (real name Sue McGuiness) has music in her DNA. From growing up in Dublin to being a part of the blossoming London scene, as a DJ, bar owner and putting her own signature on House music through her productions and label, Capture Records.

She may have taken a break from production, but with her love of music and creative spirit it was only a matter of time before Blueless came back to the studio to lay down more fresh, warm and musical grooves with a unique feel.

Dream Dancing (helmed by VU's own, Joe Moan) approached Blueless to reissue some of Capture records' most beloved releases, and got the gift of new productions to accompany them.

With the imminent release of the 'Door To The Floor' EP, VU asked Blueless a few questions to find out more about her influences...

VU: When and how did you get into music?

Blueless: I got into music at a very early age, coming from Dublin, my Da was a singer, guitarist. My ma sings, my brothers sing and play and my uncle’s and aunts also. I’ve collected records since I was 7. If I remember rightly, I bought George Bensons’ ‘White Rabbit’. Still collecting records to this day. Then going out to Discos I used to bring a bag of records in the hope I’d play, It paid off. I started to play in the clubs and after parties in Dublin. If I’m honest I didn’t get into music, it got into me!!

VU: Where did the new EP name come from?

B: The name for the EP comes from memories I have of going into a club, you’re at the door and hear the music and feel the sensation and you just want to get to the floor. No waiting on paying or going to the cloakroom, just that I always wanted to get from the door to the floor.

VU: You previously mentioned working at The End, a legendary and formative space, what are some memories you have of that period?

B: The End was a very special place, and I have great memories from nights like DTPm, Clandestino, East and West. I just remember the vibe was always great and it really was about the music and people. Many years later I’d open my own bar ‘The Vinyl Bar' in Soho and Mr. C had his after parties there, it came back round.

VU: What inspired you to start making music, and what/who are some of your favourite DJs/producers?

B: My inspiration to make music was a very natural transition from playing records. Even listening to music I’ve always taken the songs apart, always listened to what’s happening behind, underneath the arrangements. I found magic in that and was able to separate instruments in my head, I do have very sensitive sensory input in my ears and can pick out things that are not obvious.
Some of my favourite producers include: Larry Heard, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Herbert, Charles Webster, Masters At Work, Herbie Hancock, Burt Bacharach, Francois K, Osunlade, Kevin Yost, Anthony Nicholson...

VU: You had some very well known US producers on your own label Capture Records; Demarkus Lewis, Adam Pickrell & Boo Williams. How did those connections come about?

B: When I started Capture Records I had an ethos of music from the heart and soul. I wrote to the guys in the US and told them what I’m about and what I represent in the music business. They contacted me and we just connected. I went to the Miami Music festival and met them there. Great times.

VU: It's been nearly 20 years since your last release, what's got you looking to put new music out?

B: I just met the right people at the right time and they inspired me to get back into writing and I felt overwhelmed that people still listen and admire my early work.

VU: Lastly, a few of your favourite tunes?

B: This is a hard one, too many to choose!
Mystic Merlin - 'Just Can’t Give You Up'
George Benson - 'Love Ballad'
Larry Heard - 'Closer', 'What About This Love'
Arnold Jarvis & Satoshi Tomiie - 'And I Loved You'
